If you learn how to program you can code in any language. Don’t focus on just learning apex, try other languages to broaden your skills.

Going for the PD1 certification is a great way to learn more Salesforce specific development techniques. For loops and if statements are the same in any language but SOQL and LIMITS are Salesforce-only features.
Learning Salesforce administration is what I think is the most important thing you can do to become a Salesforce developer. It is crucial to understand which tools are at your disposal in the Salesforce platform and when to use them. Just because it can be done in code doesn’t mean it should.
